Scaup in one tight group, 12 Bufflehead, 70 C. Taylor's also had large numbers of waterfowl, with the best being a female Long-tailed Duck and 2 male RB Merganser. The Vesper was in the northwest corner, in the same spot as the lingering Grasshopper Sparrow in early November and with a group of 4 Savannah Sparrow-obviously larger, bulkier with a nice full eye ring. As I was scoping the Rancocas, a Snipe came in calling from the west and landed on the west side bank of the Rancocas up a bit from me. The Rancocas there was loaded up with 2 Canvasback, 5 Ring-necked Duck, 14 Pintail, 112 Am Black Duck, 5 Mallard, a Bufflehead, 19 Common Merg and 540 Canada Geese. Laurel Run Park had a Vesper Sparrow, 3 Horned Lark, a Merlin, a male Harrier and 7 Savannah Sparrow. Hit a few spots this morning, lots of stuff around overall. ġ Cooper's Hawk-flew away with a medium-sized bird in talonsĢ Gr Egret-one feeding at Wright's Cove and one flying from the heronry April 4, 2019 The trend for the state lands and Redstart is not good, zero aside from this one at the border for this former hotspotħ singing Willow Fly-always a good area in June for this species and should also be checked in late May for Alder, but doubt anyone did. If birds other than Purple Martins try to nest in your house, lower the house and remove the nest – temporarily plugging the entry holes if necessary to keep them from returning.Taylor's this morning from 5:25-10 am, a couple of new potential breeders.ġ-2 Prothonotary Warbler-singing male at Dredge Harbor near same location as on May 11 and then presumably another male singing right along the road in the flooded woods a bit before the water building only 10-15 minutes later as I walked back down the road.the flooded area along the road looks to be very nice potential habitatġ Blue Grosbeak-male singing in the open area behind the pond on the right near the entrance, could be a migrant doing the typical Blue Gros here today gone tomorrow even in June-July, likely my first at Taylor's-not much habitat for this species at Taylor'sĥ+ Bank Swallow-2 from the bluff and then 5 from the north lookout later in the morning, has not nested at the bluff for a few years and no signs of doing so this year eitherġ Am Redstart-only one singing male at the border between Taylor's and the state lands, likely the same bird as on our May 11 Taylor's walk. Waiting will help prevent problems with sparrows, starlings and other birds. However, if you are establishing a new colony - wait for the arrival of the sub-adults and don’t open your housing for another 3-6 weeks. If you have an established colony, you should be ready for the mature adults (within the red time lines shown on the map). Sub-adult martins, those in their first breeding years, tend to follow the mature adults 3-6 weeks later. The map also indicates when you can expect mature adult martins to return to established breeding sites. In the United States, this is typically the eastern ½ of the country. The first thing you need to know is whether you live within the breeding range of Progne subis subis - the Purple Martin that is attracted to man built housing.
